MIDWEEK MAYHEM BEGINS AT CONCORD MOTORSPORTS PARK AS FORD
FOCUSES, GO-KARTS STAGE WEDNESDAY INVASION
Concord (N.C.) Motorsports Park opens its 2008 “Midweek Mayhem”
motorsports calendar tomorrow night featuring the stars and cars
of USAC’s Carolina Ford Focus Midget Series plus go-kart competition
on the facility’s action-packed 1/4-mle paved oval.
A 40-lap Ford Focus race serves as the highlight of the Wednesday
night program, the first of eight in the next nine weeks (only July
2 is dark). The events will determine the destiny of USAC’s
2008 Carolina Ford Focus Championship, with points earned at Concord
certain to mold this year’s champion.
Michael Mohelski of Frederick, Md. has jumped to the early lead
in the standings for the series presented by the Richard Petty Driving
Experience, based on victories at Dillon, S.C. and Shenandoah, Va.
and a third at Jacksonville, N.C. He leads Bradley Riethmeyer of
Austin, Texas by 10 points going into Wednesday night’s events.
Michael Ward of Charlotte, N.C. won the race at Jacksonville and
sits fourth in the current standings behind Steven Intravaia of
Saylorsburg, Pa.
Fifth-ranking Ryan Osborne of Milford, N.J. gives the series added
flavor as the top-five drivers in points hail from five different
states!
The USAC Carolina Ford Focus Series is in its fifth season and after
Chase Scott swept to championships in 2004, 2005 and 2006, Tanner
Swanson won the 2007 title. Swanson has moved on to USAC Sprint
Car competition and currently leads the USAC Western Sprint Car
standings.
Scott posted a record 18 victories in series competition, while
Mark Burt owns five and Swanson and Riethmeyer, who won the 2006
All-American Driver Challenge, have four each. Scott won the only
previous Concord Ford Focus race, a 50-lapper in 2006.
